High Ability Learners
Plan
by Dan Cleveland
Educators at Cedar Bluffs Public Schools will provide students with opportunities to further develop a gifted student’s potential.
Learner with high ability means a student who gives evidence of high performance capability in such areas as intellectual, creative, or artistic capacity or in specific academic fields and who requires accelerated or differentiated curriculum programs in order to develop those capabilities fully.
Goal-Educators will provide opportunities, both inside and outside the regular classroom to meet the needs of individual students.
Objective-The classroom teacher will use a variety of instructional techniques including but not limited to: differentiated instruction, compacting, and independent studies.
Goal-Junior and Senior students will have the opportunity to take AP courses and to take dual credit courses.
Objective- Independent Study HS: In cooperation with the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Junior and Senior students who have a minimum of a A average may take independent study courses, including AP courses, on line. Students may take one of these courses each semester. Through this partnership, Cedar Bluffs Public Schools is able to expand our course offerings and quality educational opportunities to students.
Advanced Scholars:Students can earn up to thirteen hours of college credit, while still earning high school credits, through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Advanced Scholars Program. Cedar Bluffs is one of the first High Schools in the state to make this opportunity available to students. Junior and Senior students who have a minimum “A” average and a minimum ACT score of 22 are eligible.
In addition to getting an early start on college credits, at a 66% savings on current UNL tuition, our students will be getting accustomed to college-level coursework, perfecting their study habits, and gaining greater flexibility with their academic program at college.
Note:For both Independent Study High School and Advanced Scholars courses, students are assigned to a teacher at Cedar Bluffs who has the expertise in the field of study. For example students taking AP computer courses are assigned to our computer teacher. Our kids can ask questions and receive instruction from both the University instructor as well as from our teacher at Cedar Bluffs.
