How Sweet It Is
by Stacey Kenton
One of the traditions that many families have during the Christmas holiday is making sugar cookies. The students in Mrs. Kenton's class reinforced this tradition in a classroom setting.
Most of this exercise was fun but when they had to double the recipe from 4 dozen to 8 dozen cookies, they realize that some math might be involved. Increasing the ingredients was a simple computation.
Mixing instructions were followed and cookie dough was formed in the process. The next step was to roll it out and use cookie cutters to stamp out festive shapes such as Christmas trees, stars, and candy canes.
The next set of instructions got the cookies into the oven to bake. After they were out and cooled down they were frosted and sprinkled. They looked quite edible. Now for the test.
The teachers and some students, it seems, have quite a sweet tooth and put quite a dent in the platter of cookies. Oh well, that's why the students made them.
It was a fun activity and hopefully a tradition that will live on as the future holidays bring back memories of teamwork and the sweet rewards that they bring.
