H1N1 Flu Protocols
Cedar Bluffs Public Schools will follow the H1N1
recommendations made by the CDC, Three Rivers Health Department,
and the Nebraska Department of Education.
Surfaces that are more likely to have frequent hand contact, (for
example, keyboards or desks), will be disinfected on a periodic
basis as well as when a student or employee is sent home from
school with flu-like symptoms.
CDC
• Individuals with influenza-like illness remain at home until
at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100° F [37.8° C] or
greater), or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing
medications.
• Students and staff who appear to have an influenza-like illness
at arrival or become ill during the day be promptly separated from
other students and staff and sent home.
• Students and staff are encouraged to wash their hands often with
soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing.
Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective at killing flu
germs.
• Students and staff should cover their nose and mouth with a
tissue when coughing or sneezing and throw the tissue in the trash
after use.
• Ill staff and parents of ill students at higher risk of
complications from influenza are encouraged to seek early
treatment.
• If influenza severity increases, schools should consider
instituting active fever and respiratory infection symptom
screening of students and staff when they arrive at school.
• If influenza severity increases, students and staff at high risk
for influenza complications may consider staying home from school
while influenza transmission is high in their community if they, or
their families, are concerned about their ability to avoid
influenza at school.
• If influenza severity increases, school-aged children who live
with people with influenza-like illness should remain home for 5
days from the day the first household member got sick.
• If influenza severity increases, schools should explore
innovative methods for increasing social distances within the
school environment.
• If influenza severity increases, individuals with influenza-like
illness should remain at home for at least 7 days, even if symptoms
resolve sooner. Individuals who are still sick 7 days after they
become ill should continue to stay home until at least 24 hours
after symptoms have resolved.
Three Rivers Health Department
School surveillance, the tracking of attendance data by Three
Rivers Health Department, will continue to take place once a week.
If the absent rate is close to 10%, surveillance will be conducted
daily. The recommendation to close school for five to seven days
may be made when the absent rate is close to 20%.
Jeff Kuhr, Director of the Three Rivers Health Department will
provide our school district with materials to promote good hand
hygiene.
Each classroom will have germ-x hand sanitizer available for
student use in all classrooms.
Vaccine Distribution Locations
In the event our school district is chosen to be a vaccine
distribution site, we would utilize the high school gym.
Communication with Parents
Information about H1N1 will be posted on our school web site.
Links to the CDC and Three Rivers Health Department will be
provided. The Alert Now notification system will be used as
needed.
