A Busy Month for the Third Graders

March 09, 2010

The past few weeks have given us the opportunity to celebrate!  We started off the month of February by discussing Black History.  Each student chose someone that they would like to find out more about.  Their assignment was to write a short report explaining the contribution that this individual  made to society.  They chose some very interesting individuals from all walks of life.  It was fun to hear them share their information.  Please click on the following link  to listen to their reports on TeacherTube.  Black History Month

We also had the opportunity to study the Chinese New Year.  After reading the story Sam and the Lucky Money in our Reading book we decided to look further into the traditions and celebrations associated with this 15 day event.  We learned a few Chinese symbols, made Chinese lanterns and talked about the many things families do to celebrate.

February was also Dental Health Month so we danced and sang with the students from kindergarten through 2nd grade.  We reviewed the many things we must do to keep our teeth healthy and made a promise to brush our teeth morning and night.  All students received a certificate and a new toothbrush if they followed through on this promise.

Mrs. Bell, our wonderful volunteer, brought in a quilt that she had made for her daughter.  The quilt  showed many of the symbols used by the slaves who were trying to escape by way of the Underground Railroad.

Finally,  we celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday in a number of fun ways.  Chad Roumph is always eager to help us out and came over to read Wacky Wednesday to the elementary students. We also discussed the message to be learned in many of Seuss' popular stories.
