How to Address the Board of Education

The Board of Education encourages your participation in its deliberations and has tried to make it convenient for you to express your views to the Board. If you wish to address the Board, please obtain a card that is on the table with the agenda; fill the card out completely and give it to the Board President prior to the meeting.

The Board President will review the card and invite you to speak either at the Public Forum, if your topic is not on the board agenda; or you will be given time when the item is up for discussion on the agenda.

Board agendas are very full and time is limited. For that reason, we request that you speak only once on an item and that you limit your remarks either when addressing an agenda item or when speaking on non-agenda items to a maximum of three minutes. If numerous individuals request to speak on a particular item or during the Public Forum on Non-Agenda Items, the Board President may limit the total time allocated to a total of 15 minutes for that item, thereby reducing the time for each speaker.

Please note that board members are legally prohibited from discussing non-agenda items, and therefore, will not respond to items presented during this portion of the meeting.

Furthermore, if you are planning to speak about a personnel or student matter involving an individual, please understand that our policies require that such concerns initially be directed to the administration for consideration.  Board members will generally not respond to any questions you ask or comments you may make about individual staff members or students.  You are cautioned that slanderous comments are not protected just because they are made at Board meeting.

Additionally, public comments regarding personnel could bias the board of education, if that person were to be terminated and request a hearing, as the board of education serves as the hearing officer on all cases of termination of contracts for certified staff members.

Please remember that this is a public meeting for the conduct of the business of the Board of Education.  Offensive language, personal attacks and hostile conduct will not be tolerated.  The Board of Education will recess and the individual may be removed from the meeting by authorities.
