Snowflake Creativity Abounds in Math
by Brian Fleischman
As the 8th graders prepare for the end of the semester and the beginning of their first round of standards testing we took a break to study snowflakes. Part of this study was looking at the creation of each snowflake and at what temperature will certain types of snowflakes appear. We were all amazed at the numerous different types of snowflake categories.
All snowflakes are hexagonal (6-sides) in shape and symmetric (the same) from one half to the other. The mini science lesson worked into some great geometric conversation. The conclusion of this unit was the creation of many, many snowflakes to put room 123 into the proper state of mind for the season. You can see from the pictures that many of the snowflakes are actually hexagonal in shape. Many are also creative deviations from an actual snowflake. The creativity of all students showed through. It was very exciting to see their analytic minds at work. Many of their snowflakes show just how creative our students are and just how analytic their minds can actually be. I am impressed.Snowflake Creativity Abounds in Math
