Superintendent Newsletter April 14, 2022

Dear Cedar Bluffs Families,

Reminder, No School Friday April 15th or Monday April 18.

Cell phone, game console and computers are wonderful tools for communicating, learning and can be a healthy enjoyment for kids in limited time frames. Unfortunately, technology can also lead to misuse and over use by students and our children. It’s important for parents to set limits on our child’s screen time. Outside, exploratory play with other children still remains the best way for children to spend their extracurricular time as it builds collaborative skills, problem solving skills and interpretive play.

Even though dealing with technology issues can be very challenging, we can achieve success by applying some age-old parenting truths:

·                Focus mostly on kids’ strengths rather than their weaknesses.

·                Kids need limits and limits are best set through actions instead of hollow threats.

·                When kids make poor decisions, they need to experience natural or logical consequences.

·                Consequences are always more effective when provided with loving empathy.

·                Our kids will learn how to live their lives by watching us. According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Children between 2-5 years old should be limited to 1 hour of screen time per day. As children grow, there is no one size fits all approach; however it is important to encourage unplugged, creative times at night especially right before bed. The brain needs to be unplugged at least 1 hour before sleep. If your child has a hard time sleeping and is restless in bed, it maybe because they haven’t unplugged. Consider using apps that control the length of time a child can use a device, or an app that shuts down after 8pm. Have open discussions with your child about the content, length of screen time and electronic communications your child has on their device. Know that it really is okay for a parent to ask to look at your child’s device. Just like an adult, sometime children will “text” something they wouldn’t ordinarily say to a person’s face. Help them deifier the difference. Remind your child of digital citizenship and that whatever they put on social media will be there for eternity. Have a Safe and wonderful Holiday!
