Dear Families of Cedar Bluffs Students in 8th – 12th Grades,
Week of Understanding is an annual educational initiative created by the Institute for Holocaust Education and area schools. The week is designed to deliver Holocaust survivor testimony to a maximum number of students in one school week.
On Tuesday, March 21st our eligible 8th – 12th grade students will have the opportunity to listen to Peter Metzelaar.
Mr Metzelaar will be speaking to area students at Wahoo Public School. Peter was born in Amsterdam in 1935. In 1942, when Peter was 7, the Nazis seized Peter’s entire family except for Peter and his mother. Peter’s mother contacted the Dutch Underground for help. The Underground found shelter for Peter and his mother on a small farm and later in The Hague. Peter, his mother, and his aunt were the only survivors of his family.
After the war, Peter and his mother immigrated to the United States in 1949. Peter had a long career as a radiology technologist. He moved to Seattle in 1997 and continues to be an active member of the Holocaust Center for Humanity's Speakers Bureau.
If you would prefer your child not participate in this educational opportunity, please contact Mrs. Headid at 402-628-2080 by the end of the school day on Monday, March 20th.
